Design: Shiho Sugita
Objective
The project I worked on involved remaking album jackets for artists.
Design Concept
- Nostalgia
- Dreamlike design
- A slight sense of surreality
- Pop colours
Visual Elements
The idea is to create a composition that reflects the inspiration behind the artist’s songs and lyrics. Incorporating organic objects would be a fitting choice to achieve this. In particular, the upward-facing hand symbolizes positivity and hope, which aligns well with the artist’s message.
The hand was also a prominent element in the artist’s actual album; hence, it forms a crucial component of this project.
Additionally, flowers are a powerful symbol of growth and change, which could further enhance the composition’s thematic elements.
Finally, the house can serve as a symbol of retrospection, memory, and nostalgia, which could help to evoke strong emotions in the viewer. By combining these different elements, the composition could become a powerful reflection of the artist’s vision and inspiration.
Creative Strategy
When designing the album cover, I drew inspiration from the music and the cover design to create a cohesive and meaningful visual representation. The album’s central theme was “Tilt at the Wind No More,” driven by McMahon’s introspective lyricism. The design had to evoke a nostalgic, slightly dreamy impression to capture this essence.
To accomplish this, I used a warm, slightly yellowish pop colour scheme that imbued the cover with a retro and nostalgic feel. I also chose hazy colours that reduced saturation to create a softer and more dreamlike quality. The result was a visually pleasing and emotive design that captured the album’s essence.
Moreover, the album’s positivity, growth, and change themes were also integral to the design. I included positive elements such as bright colours and punchy hooks to reflect this. Each track exudes joy while conveying an underlying message of progress and hope.
Overall, the design was carefully crafted to evoke the emotions and themes of the album in a visually stunning and captivating way.
